When you replace your missing teeth with dentures, you may be excited to have a full smile once again. They are designed with your comfort in mind, so having them in may be a breeze once you’re adjusted to them. You may feel more confident wearing them, so you might try to keep them on 24/7! However, this isn’t the best for your oral health. Keep reading to learn three reasons why you should remove them during the night.
1.) More Likely to Develop Gum Disease
Dentures are comfortable and snug because they are made specifically for your mouth. The suction that is made by this keeps them firmly in place, allowing you to enjoy a wider range of foods than before. However, this does reduce circulation to your gums a bit. By not giving these tissues a chance to breathe, they won’t get the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
Not only that, but bacteria can build up underneath your prosthetic as well. This can increase your risk of gum disease. If you have this condition, then the fit may become uncomfortable, and you can develop sores more easily!
2.) May Experience Quicker Jawbone Loss
Missing teeth often comes with jawbone loss because the bone isn’t getting the stimulation it used to from tooth roots. Dentures are able to reduce how quickly it progresses, but wearing them constantly can do the opposite!
The persistent friction can weaken your jaw over time, which will make it sit oddly and slip more often. Thankfully, by taking them out while you sleep, you can avoid this and keep your jaw healthy.
3.) Higher Risk of Denture Stomatitis
As was mentioned briefly, bacteria can build up under your dentures when you don’t remove them. Both germs and yeast enjoy the dark, damp environment it creates. As they grow, it can lead to denture stomatitis.
This condition is a type of thrush that leads to inflammation, a noticeable red color, and a burning sensation in your gums. When it’s chronic, your immune system can weaken, so your body will struggle fighting off infections.
Thankfully, all the above can be avoided by letting your dentures soak in water or a cleaning solution while you sleep. Before you do this, give them a good scrubbing with a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear, gentle soap and you can remove bacteria that threaten your oral health! Gently wipe down your mouth as well, then you’re set up for success. Your full smile will be able to stay at its best for years to come.
