What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

In the past, dentists would use a substance called amalgam to fill cavities. This was a combination of several different types of metals, including mercury and silver, used to support and protect your tooth from future threats of decay. Not only did these types of fillings lead to dental discoloration and heightened sensitivity, but they were also highly noticeable.

Dr. Dabah and our team want you to be able to smile without anxiety, which is why we utilize tooth-colored fillings instead. These are made from a biocompatible material, called composite resin. With the ability to naturally fuse with your tooth’s enamel, they offer a variety of benefits to the appearance and health of your grin.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

Tooth-colored fillings are typically completed within a single appointment at our office. We’ll begin by numbing the area with a local anesthetic, if necessary, before removing the loose, decayed portions of your tooth. We’ll then sanitize the area to kill any lingering bacteria before color-matching the shade of composite resin to your enamel. To block off the inner, more sensitive exposed parts of your tooth as a result of the damage caused by the cavity, we’ll place the resin within the tooth and cure it. Finally, to make it appear virtually indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth, Dr. Dabah will sculpt it.
